The Magus Circle Characters — The Six Mages and How They Unlock

The Magus Circle characters guide: the six mages of the circle, what each one changes in a run, how unlocks work, and what is still undocumented.

How Many Characters The Magus Circle Has

Six. The official store page is specific about it: you play as the 6 mages of the circle, each with their own skill trees, abilities and emotional baggage, and the store's short description adds that you will meet other mages and unlock their abilities over time. That makes the roster both a gameplay choice and a progression track — you are not only picking a loadout, you are meeting the cast.

What is not on the store page is a name list. The six mages are counted officially but not enumerated officially, so everything below separates what the game itself shows from what a third party claims.

The Mages Documented So Far

Two mages are named in material that actually shows the game running. The launch-day playthrough opens on Milk — the player comments on the name and the game's voice lines address her directly — and the same footage introduces Matcha, who arrives with a full self-introduction and a distinctly academic set of problems. A third-party character overview lists a mage called Rum, but that page's body text was not retrievable when this page was built, so treat the name as unconfirmed.

Two more names show up in official patch notes, but they read as manor characters rather than confirmed playable mages: Odds, whose bets are described as displaying the anima bonus they provide, and whose door was given better signposting, and Coffee, who was fixed for congratulating the player after a failed potion craft. Both are listed here only as characters the game acknowledges by name.

What Each Mage Actually Changes

The store page's wording is the whole answer available so far: each mage comes with their own skill trees and abilities, which means the pick shapes the run rather than decorating it. Because the game is built on 20 spells and 600 possible upgrades, a per-mage skill tree is a second axis on top of the upgrade pool, and the store page pairs the mages with the four planets and their colossal bosses in the same bullet.

The things a mage choice is documented to touch:

  • The skill tree you progress through on top of the in-run upgrade picks.
  • The abilities available to that character, which the store page lists separately from the shared spell pool.
  • How the story introduces you to the cast, since the manor conversations are character-specific.
  • Unlock gating — the patch notes confirm the game will hold you on Milk until another mage unlocks, so roster order is deliberate rather than cosmetic.

What is not documented: whether a mage's skill tree unlocks instantly or fills in gradually, whether two mages share any upgrades, and whether the six are all available at launch or drip in through story progress. The launch-week patch notes only tell us that at least one is gated.

Unlocks, the Manor and the Story

The character layer lives between runs. The store page describes exploring the manor, getting to know your fellow mages and uncovering the secrets of the Circle, and the same description opens with the story premise: magic is under siege, you are caught in a cosmic war you did not sign up for, and the Tide is the force the mages are holding back. A mage character you meet in the manor explains the Tide directly in the launch-day footage, referring to it as the evil force heralding the end of mana.

The hub is also where the meta progression sits, and the mages are the entry point to it. The store page's progression bullet lists familiars, wagers, potions and a garden, the future-update post names tarot, potions and scribing as systems it wants to make clearer, and the 1.0.3 hotfix added new spell scrolls that you find by exploring the hub rather than by fighting. In practice, the time you spend talking to mages is also the time you spend unlocking the next layer of the game.

What Is Not Documented Yet

The honest gap list is longer than the confirmed facts, and it is worth writing down rather than filling in with guesses:

  • The full names of all six mages. Only Milk and Matcha are documented from the game itself.
  • The unlock conditions. The patch notes prove one unlock exists; they do not say what triggers it.
  • Each mage's skill tree, its size or its upgrade list.
  • Whether the four unnamed mages are available at launch or added through story progress.
  • Voice cast and credits for the mages. The store page does not carry a cast list.
  • Whether familiar or potion systems are mage-specific or shared across the roster.

If you are planning a run around a specific mage, the practical advice is to start on Milk, play the manor conversations, and let the first unlock arrive through story progression rather than hunting for a character select screen that the sources do not describe.

FAQ

How many characters does The Magus Circle have?
Six playable mages. The official store page states that you play as the 6 mages of the circle, each with their own skill trees, abilities and emotional baggage, and its short description promises you will meet other mages and unlock their abilities.
Who are the mages in The Magus Circle?
Two are documented by name in gameplay footage and patch notes: Milk, the character the game starts you on, and Matcha, who introduces himself as a scholar of the six spire and almost a doctor of mythological anthropology. A third name, Rum, appears in a third-party character overview that has not been confirmed against the game.
Which mage do you start with?
Milk. The 1.0.3 hotfix on September 25, 2026 includes the fix for forcing Milk until Matcha unlock, which confirms both that Milk is the default and that at least one other mage is gated behind an unlock rather than available from the start.
Do the mages play differently?
They are built to. The store page says each of the six has its own skill trees and abilities, so the pick changes what your run can grow into rather than only changing a portrait. The individual trees themselves are not published anywhere yet.
Where does the character story happen?
In the manor hub between runs. The store page's story bullet is to explore the manor, get to know your fellow mages and uncover the secrets of the Circle, and the mages you meet there are how the narrative advances rather than through cut scenes inside a run.
