What is The Magus Circle?

The Magus Circle is a vampire-survivors style roguelite from developer and publisher By Witchlight, released for Windows, macOS and Linux on September 24, 2026. Its premise is stated in one line on the store page — the game is built around drawing to cast spells — and the loop follows the genre it borrows from: survive waves of monsters, spend level-ups on upgrades, beat a map boss, then return to a hub to spend what you earned.

What separates it from the rest of the horde-survivor shelf is the input layer. Each spell has its own sigil, you draw that sigil with the cursor and release to submit it, and the store page promises the check is forgiving enough that even crude drawings still cast. Underneath sits a 20-spell pool, 600 possible upgrades, four planets with colossal bosses, and six playable mages with their own skill trees, all tied together by a manor hub where you meet the cast and advance the story between runs.

The game shipped without an Early Access period, but it was not finished being fixed on day one: version 1.0.3 arrived on September 25, 2026 and version 1.0.4 on September 27, 2026, covering extraction bugs, spell fixes and balance changes. A free demo had run earlier in the year, from February 2026 until it was delisted, and much of the game's early following came from it.
