What is Slow Roads?

Slow Roads is a casual driving game from developer and publisher Topograph Interactive, released on Steam for Windows and Linux on September 23, 2026. It is built around a single idea: an endless, procedurally generated scenic road with no objectives, no timer and no score, so the only thing to do is drive and look. The Steam page describes it as chasing the horizon with no challenges or distractions.

The world is generated as you drive rather than loaded from a map file. The developer's own technical write-up describes an infinitely tiled heightmap built with a Perlin-like algorithm, a road midline that advances about 10 metres at a time toward the flattest available direction, and a 15 km horizon measured from the vehicle. World generation is seeded, which is what lets you revisit a road you liked, and the scene is configurable by location, season, weather and time of day.

The game began as a free browser project at slowroads.io and that version is still running and still ad-free, currently on version 2.4.2. The paid Steam release carries the exclusive extras, including the California coast location, off-road trail road styles, the hatch and sports car, vehicle customisation and tuning, combustion engines with manual transmission, configurable traffic and a music and radio interface. The developer states that sales on Steam are what fund the free version staying free.

FAQ

Answers use only sourced facts; unverified items are marked.

What is Slow Roads?
A casual driving game from Topograph Interactive, released on Steam on September 23, 2026 for Windows and Linux. The Steam page describes it as an endless drive through procedurally generated scenic landscapes with no objectives, challenges or distractions, so there is no finish line and nothing to fail.
Is Slow Roads free?
The browser version at slowroads.io is free and has never carried ads, microtransactions or paywalls. The Steam release costs $7.19 in the US, which is 10 percent off a $7.99 list price, and buying it is what funds the free version staying free. A free distance-limited demo is also available on Steam.
How does the world generation work?
A procedural engine builds the landscape and road as you drive, using a Perlin-like heightmap and a road midline that steps forward in roughly 10-metre increments toward the flattest direction, bounded by a 15 km horizon from the vehicle. Generation is seeded, so the same seed rebuilds the same road.
What is different in the Steam version?
The paid build adds the California coast location, off-road trail road styles, the hatch and sports car, vehicle customisation and tuning, combustion engines with manual or automatic transmission, configurable traffic, a music and radio interface, high-definition assets, profiles and 7 achievements. The free web version stays a more minimal build.
