What is Substrate: Emergence?

Substrate: Emergence is a real-time strategy game built on an artificial life simulation, developed and published by Petri Dish Games LLC. It went into Early Access on September 24, 2026 for Windows and Linux at $7.79, and the official description states the premise in one line: grow colonies of fluorescent cells that mutate, swarm and devour each other in a petri dish arena while you propagate a unique biology of your own and compete against rival labs.

What separates it from the rest of the strategy shelf is that you do not give orders. Every cell has a unique genome that shapes its behaviour and appearance, organelles are defined by genes, and behaviour comes from a miniature neural network and genetic algorithms rather than scripts. Genes pass down through generations and accumulate small mutations until a lineage becomes a new strain, and because every mutation is visible as fluorescence, you can read a culture's genetics off the dish before deciding what to keep.

The Early Access framing is unusually candid. The developer, who works solo with a background in cellular neuroscience, writes that the story and tutorial are highly unfinished and short while the rest of the game has a lot to explore, that the challenge is still being established and balanced, and that the price will rise as the game expands while remaining a one-time purchase with no microtransactions. A free demo has been on Steam since June 5, 2026 and the developer states it will keep it current, minus the newer opponents and the map editor.

What is Substrate: Emergence?
A real-time strategy game built on an artificial life simulation from Petri Dish Games LLC, released into Early Access on September 24, 2026 for Windows and Linux. You grow colonies of fluorescent cells that mutate, swarm and devour each other in a petri dish arena while competing against rival labs, and every cell's behaviour comes from a miniature neural network and genetic algorithms rather than from scripted orders.
How much does it cost, and will the price change?
It is US$7.79 at the time of writing, which is 40 percent off the $12.99 list price under an introductory offer the store marks as ending October 1. The developer states in the store's Early Access notes that the price is planned to rise as the game expands and is polished, and that it will always be a one-time purchase with no microtransactions.
Is there a free demo?
Yes. A separate free demo app has been on Steam since June 5, 2026 (app ID 4803170) and the developer says it will continue to stay current as a free alternative. It does not include the newer AI opponents, their custom trainer or the map editor, and the story levels are exclusive to the full game apart from the first three tutorial levels.
What platforms does it run on?
Windows and Linux, with no macOS build and no console or mobile version announced. The simulation runs on GPU compute shaders, so the requirements ask for DirectX 12 on Windows or Vulkan 1.1 on Linux, with 8 GB of RAM minimum and 16 GB recommended; the store notes state that integrated graphics run at the Low quality preset.
