Dragon Shelter Crafting Materials — Where to Find Every Resource
A Dragon Shelter crafting materials guide: where every resource is found, the axes and pickaxes that gate them, and the materials you should never sell.
Where Dragon Shelter Crafting Materials Come From
Crafting materials in Dragon Shelter are gathered, not bought. The game hands you a farm and a small town, and nearly every raw resource is on one of those two maps: you cut trees, break rocks, pick berries, cut grass and catch fireflies at home, then walk into town for clay piles, larger trees and extra ore rocks. The official store description frames this as the core loop — grow crops, harvest resources, and craft valuable goods while your dragon helpers support every step.

The important structural detail is that crafting is not done in your own inventory. A launch-week guide reports that you take materials to an NPC and they craft the item for you: the Blacksmith, the Gardener, the Carpenter, the Alchemist and the Animal Keeper each handle their own recipe list, and most recipes unlock through quests rather than through a skill tree.

The Full Material List and Where Each One Is Found
This is the complete raw material list from the launch-week guide, with the location it documents for each one. Everything below is reported from that guide rather than from the developer, so treat single-spot claims as reported rather than confirmed.
| Material | Where to find it | What it feeds |
|---|---|---|
| Berry | Berry bushes on your farm | Early food, and Jam through cooking |
| Caterpillar Light | Use an Alchemy Flask on a Caterpillar when the bottle icon appears above it | Alchemy and quest items |
| Clay | Large brown piles in town, most notably the western beach | Vases, baskets, oven, stove, foundations |
| Copper Ore | Copper-flecked rocks on the farm; a few in town | Copper Ingots, Firefly Lantern |
| Fireflies | Swarms of glowing yellow bugs on the farm; respawn infrequently and at random | Fire Essence |
| Hardwood Log | The largest trees on your farm and in town | Hardwood Boards |
| Hay | Cut any grass or weeds on the farm or in town; regrows quickly | Stone tools, trampoline, fertilisers |
| Herb | Purple flowers on your farm; does not appear to respawn | Recipes and quest turn-ins |
| Iron Ore | Rocks with dots of iron ore on the farm and in town | Later tools and equipment |
| Log | Trees and fallen logs on the farm and in town | Planks, furniture, barrels |
| Memory Nuts | Greenish-blue bushes on your farm only | Recipes and quests |
| Oak Log | Medium-sized trees on the farm and in town | Mid-tier crafting |
| Silk | Caterpillars, once livestock is unlocked; about one per animal after a day or two | Recipes and clothing-style items |
| Slime Thread | Raising Water Jellyfish; typically one per day per animal | Lava Terrarium, copper tools |
| Smoldering Coal | Dropped by Fire Salamanders you raise | Fire-tier crafting |
| Stick | Byproduct of chopping other trees | The first Stone tools, and few other recipes |
| Stone | Large rock clusters throughout the farm and the village | Tools, foundations, mills, essence recipes |
Tool Gates: Which Axe or Pickaxe You Actually Need
Gathering is gated by tool tier rather than by location, and the guide is specific about which tool opens which material.
| Material | Tool it requires | Where the tool comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Copper Ore | Stone Pickaxe, Iron Pickaxe or Festival Pickaxe | Stone tools unlock after the quest reported as Blacksmith's Request |
| Iron Ore | Copper Pickaxe or Festival Pickaxe | Copper tools unlock after getting the Fire Dragon and restarting the Blacksmith's forge |
| Oak Log | Copper Axe or Festival Axe | Same copper-tier unlock as above |
| Hardwood Log | Iron Axe or Festival Axe | Iron tools are sold by merchants during festivals; an Iron Axe recipe is not documented in the sources reviewed here |
Festival merchants matter more than they look. The guide notes that buying tools from merchants at festivals is arguably easier than crafting the Copper or Iron equivalents, which makes a festival day a legitimate shortcut around the whole tool chain. The ordinary Stone Axe and Stone Pickaxe are the exception: they cost 5 Stone, 4 Stick and 4 Hay each at the Blacksmith.
Animal Ranch Materials: Silk, Slime Thread and Smoldering Coal
Three materials cannot be gathered at all — they are produced by animals on your farm, which is why the Animal Keeper is worth unlocking early. The pattern is the same for each: feed the animal on its first day, then wait a day or two before production begins.
- Silk — from Caterpillars, one per animal after the first day or two, available once livestock is unlocked.
- Slime Thread — from Water Jellyfish, typically one per day per animal.
- Smoldering Coal — dropped by Fire Salamanders, another animal you raise rather than find.
Caterpillar Light is the odd one out in this group. It is not produced by ranching; the guide describes collecting it by using an Alchemy Flask on a Caterpillar when the bottle icon hovers over it, after you have fed that Caterpillar consistently for a few days.
Materials You Should Not Sell
The temptation in the first week is to sell everything for seeds, and two materials punish that.
- Fireflies: never sell them. They are consumed crafting Fire Essence in later quests, and they respawn infrequently and at random, so you may simply have to wait if you sold the batch you had.
- Herb: the purple flowers on your farm do not appear to respawn, or respawn very rarely, so selling them removes a material you cannot reliably replace.
- Berry bushes and Memory Nut bushes: do not destroy them while clearing space. Berry bushes may not grow back at all, and Memory Nuts come only from the greenish-blue bushes on your own farm.
- Hay and Sticks are the reverse case. Both are easy to over-collect — grass regrows quickly — so the guide suggests holding one or two stacks and selling the excess.
If you do run short of wood, the developer's Patch 1 news post points at the forest behind town: it always has resources, and trees and other resources there respawn every 3 to 5 days.
How Materials Get Spent
Most materials disappear into three sinks: renovating the town, upgrading your tools, and feeding the elemental essence chain that gates everything else. The essence recipes are the clearest example of how far a stack of gathered material goes.
- Water Essence — 1 Water Flower plus 1 Clay, crafted by the Alchemist.
- Earth Essence — 2 Wise Mushroom plus 3 Stone.
- Fire Essence — 2 Flame Rose plus 4 Fireflies.
- Copper Ingot — 1 Copper Ore plus 1 Fire Essence, at the Blacksmith.
- Plank — 4 Log; Hardwood Board — 2 Hardwood Log, both at the Carpenter.
On top of that comes the town itself. The official store description says that as you build trust with the townsfolk you help restore houses, gardens, shops, paths and the small comforts of daily life, and those repairs are paid for in exactly the materials above. Exact quantities for most building and quest turn-ins are not published by the developer, and the launch-week recipe list itself leaves several entries marked with unknown counts, so this page does not fill those gaps with guesswork.
FAQ
- Where do you find crafting materials in Dragon Shelter?
- Almost everything comes from your own farm and the town next to it. Wood, stone, ore, berries, herbs and fireflies are gathered on the farm; clay comes from brown piles in town, most notably the western beach, and larger trees and extra ore rocks sit around the town itself. A launch-week guide lists 17 raw materials in total.
- Which tools do you need for the rarer materials?
- Gathering is gated by tool tier. A Stone Pickaxe or Iron Pickaxe gets Copper Ore, a Copper Pickaxe or Festival Pickaxe gets Iron Ore, a Copper Axe or Festival Axe gets Oak Log, and only an Iron Axe or Festival Axe can fell the biggest trees for Hardwood Log. Stone and ordinary logs need no special tool.
- Which materials should you never sell?
- Fireflies and Herb are the two named by a launch-week guide as keep-forever materials: Fireflies are consumed crafting Fire Essence and respawn infrequently and at random, and Herb does not appear to respawn at all. You should also avoid clearing the bushes that produce Berries and Memory Nuts, because Memory Nuts grow nowhere else.
- How do you get Silk, Slime Thread and Smoldering Coal?
- All three come from animals you raise rather than from the map. Silk comes from Caterpillars once livestock is unlocked, Slime Thread from Water Jellyfish at roughly one per day per animal, and Smoldering Coal is dropped by Fire Salamanders. In each case you feed the animal on its first day and production starts a day or two later.
- Where does Clay come from in Dragon Shelter?
- Clay comes from the large brown piles scattered around town, and the guide singles out the western beach as the best-known spot. It is a town resource rather than a farm one, and Clay feeds several early recipes including the Vase, Basket with Jars, Oven, Stove and both Foundation types.
